Service Projects
Nursing Home Bingo
This project coordinates BINGO at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, located on the campus of Olathe Medical Center, The project needs 4-6 members to help each time. OJSL provides homemade treats and all members are invited to help and encouraged to donate prizes. There are day and evening BINGO times.
Crafters
Crafter’s have taken on the project of knitting, crocheting and sewing hats for Kansas City Cancer Center. They have also made book marks for users of the center to have. Making jewelry for the Bingo groups to use as prizes has also been a part of crafters for the past several years.
Children's Community Theater
Also known as “Jabberwocks”, this project involves a dedicated group of women who perform yearly at Olathe elementary schools – historically in the fall. This is usually a 2-year commitment – the play is performed at half the schools one year and the other half the next. This project is one of the more time intensive and requires daytime availability. The troupe has great fun and becomes very close. In addition to actors, members are needed for props, music, costumes, stage work and scheduling (approximately 6-8 members seems to be ideal). We will begin a new show in fall 2009 so this is a great time to join this project!
Bell Ringers for Salvation Army
This project is unique because it provides all members the opportunity to serve by ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. Members may sign up to ring during the day, in the evening or on weekends in increments of 2-3 hours. The schedule can easily accommodate most anyone’s schedule and your family or groups (girl scouts, boy scouts, church groups) are also welcome to join you. Members who participate may ring one or more times and our schedule typically runs from after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.
Main Street U.S.A.
Geography and History is the focus of this project for elementary students – primarily Olathe district schools but other area schools as well. Location is Center of Grace in Olathe. The concept is modeled after ‘Exchange City’ and 3-4 classrooms attend for 1-day sessions. Adult volunteers help with the different ‘centers’ and the time commitment is 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Each OJSL committee member works approximately 4 sessions over the course of the school year. Don Everhart is the director (a long time teacher in the Olathe district) and assures us the training is minimal and can be accomplished before the students arrive for the session.
OCTA Concessions
This committee operates the concession stand at the Olathe Community Theater. There are usually five shows per year – September, November, January, March and May. Each play runs three weekends (Friday & Saturday) with one Thursday performance per play. Two members work per play; time is 7-9:30 or 10:00 PM depending on the length of the play. Refreshments are sold at intermission, with curtain time at 8:00 PM. Members are welcome and encouraged to stay and watch the play!

Hidden Glen Color Wheel
The Color Wheel is a children’s activity tent sponsored by OJSL at the Hidden Glen Arts Festival in the fall. The chairs and committee begin their work over the summer months planning the children’s projects for the event. This committee’s meetings are scheduled at the discretion of the chair and the entire membership is invited to participate the weekend of the event, usually the first weekend in October. The time commitment involves work over the summer and early Fall, and is intense on the festival weekend. However, the project ends early in the service year and allows for participation in other projects.
